The Strength That Sustains a Leader
Over the years I’ve learned that leadership is not built on talent alone. It is not sustained by passion alone. There is something deeper, something that keeps a leader steady when everything around them is pulling in different directions.
The Bible calls it temperance.
In 2 Peter 1, we are instructed to add to our faith virtue, knowledge, and then temperance. That tells me something important. Faith is the foundation, but temperance is what helps carry us forward. Without it, we may start strong, but we will not finish well.
Temperance simply means self control. It is self restraint. It is a well ordered life. It is being in control of your emotions instead of your emotions controlling you. It is stability. It is balance. It is knowing where you are going and having the boundaries in place to get there.
Every effective leader must come to grips with this truth. If we do not learn to lead ourselves, we will never be able to lead others.
Jesus Himself modeled this. The scripture tells us He knew where He came from, He knew where He was, and He knew where He was going. That is a life that is ordered. That is a life with clarity. That is a life with boundaries.
And that is what temperance produces.
Boundaries are not restrictions that hold us back. Boundaries are what give us freedom. Rules bring freedom into our lives. When there are no boundaries, life becomes scattered and out of order. The Bible says without vision, people perish. That word perish means to be scattered because there are no restraints.
Vision creates boundaries.
Think about a river. When a river stays within its banks, it becomes a source of life. But when it overflows its boundaries, it becomes destructive. The same is true in our lives.
Many leaders struggle not because they lack ability, but because they lack order. They lack consistency. They lack priorities. And without temperance, faith cannot operate the way it was designed to work.
Another word for temperance is moderation. It is the ability to stay steady. Not up one day and down the next. Not driven by every emotion or circumstance.
If we cannot conquer ourselves, we cannot conquer anything else.
Emotions are a gift from God, but they must be managed. They can be a blessing or they can become a curse depending on how we handle them. Too many people are led by what they feel instead of what they know from God’s Word.
We manage our emotions by renewing our minds in the Word of God, by relying on the Holy Spirit, and by choosing praise. A renewed mind leads to a prosperous life.
The Bible says that a person without control over their own spirit is like a city without walls. That means they are exposed, vulnerable, and easily defeated.
Without self control, we will never reach where God has called us to go.
But when we embrace temperance, when we bring our lives into order, when we allow the Holy Spirit to help us develop discipline and consistency, we position ourselves to finish the race God has set before us.
Today I want to encourage you as a leader. Pay attention to the areas of your life that are out of order. Strengthen your boundaries. Renew your mind. Stay steady.
Because the strength that sustains a leader is not found in outward success.
It is found in a life that is under control.
