The Authority of the Believer_Pt.2
Living in the Name
One of the biggest misconceptions Christians have is believing that the name of Jesus is simply something we add to the end of a prayer.
We pray, "In Jesus' name, amen," and hope everything changes.
But the authority of Jesus was never intended to function like a magic phrase. It flows out of relationship. It flows out of surrender. It flows out of living under His authority every single day.
If I want to walk in the authority Christ has given me, I first have to live in His name.
Authority Requires Alignment
James 4:7 says,
"Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."
Most believers love the second half of that verse.
We want the devil to flee.
But many overlook the first command.
Submit to God.
There is no resisting without submitting.
Authority begins with alignment.
The more my life aligns with God's Word, the greater confidence I have to stand against whatever comes against me.
That truth changes how I lead my family, my business, my team, and every other responsibility God has entrusted to me.
The Name Is More Than a Word
Philippians tells us that God has given Jesus the name above every name.
As I studied that passage, I discovered something fascinating.
The Greek word translated "name" also carries the idea of rank, position, and authority.
That means the authority of Jesus is not simply found in saying His name.
It is found in living under His rule.
Many believers know how to say the name of Jesus.
Far fewer are allowing the name of Jesus to govern how they live.
The question is not simply, "Am I using His name?"
The greater question is,
"Am I living in His name?"
Authenticity Releases Authority
One of the greatest enemies of spiritual authority is hypocrisy.
God has never been impressed by appearances.
Throughout Scripture He continually looks at the condition of the heart.
I can say the right words.
I can attend church.
I can serve faithfully.
I can even pray impressive prayers.
But if my private life is disconnected from Christ, I should not expect to consistently experience His authority.
God is not looking for perfection.
He is looking for authenticity.
When my private life matches my public confession, I position myself for God to work through me.
People may see my gifts.
God sees my motives.
Integrity Gives Authority Weight
Leadership is influence.
Whether we realize it or not, someone is always watching.
The authority we carry is strengthened when our character supports our message.
Integrity simply means I am the same person on Monday that I am on Sunday.
I treat people with honor when no one is watching.
I refuse compromise when it would be easier to take shortcuts.
I choose obedience even when it costs me something.
Character may not attract applause, but it attracts God's favor.
Stay Close to Jesus
Jesus said,
"Abide in Me... apart from Me you can do nothing."
That may be one of the most important leadership principles in all of Scripture.
Our effectiveness will never exceed our intimacy with Christ.
Prayer is not a religious exercise.
Reading God's Word is not checking a box.
Time with God keeps my heart tender.
It keeps my motives pure.
It reminds me that every opportunity I have is because of His grace.
The closer I stay to Jesus, the more naturally His authority flows through my life.
Leadership Application
This week I encourage you to ask yourself an honest question:
Am I merely speaking the name of Jesus, or am I living in His name?
Examine your priorities.
Examine your habits.
Examine your motives.
The goal is not religious performance.
The goal is a genuine relationship with Christ that transforms every area of life.
When we live under His authority, we can confidently walk in the authority He has entrusted to us.
That is where lasting influence begins.
