Walking in the Shoes of Peace
The Armor of God | Part 3
Every day, you and I make a decision.
We can either prepare for the battles ahead, or we can walk into them unprepared.
The Apostle Paul tells us to put on the full Armor of God, and one of those pieces is often overlooked. It is the shoes of the gospel of peace. That may sound like an unusual piece of armor, but it is absolutely essential if we're going to stand strong when life gets difficult. Peace isn't simply the absence of conflict. Peace is the confidence that God is with you in the middle of the conflict.
Peace Is More Than a Feeling
Most people think peace is a destination.
"I'll have peace when..."
When my finances improve.
When I get promoted.
When my kids settle down.
When my health gets better.
When life slows down.
The problem with that thinking is there will always be another challenge. Jesus never promised a life without storms. He promised His presence in the middle of them. Real peace is not determined by your circumstances. Real peace is determined by your confidence in Christ.
Jesus said,
"Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you."
He didn't promise us an easy life. He promised us His peace.
Why Soldiers Wore Special Shoes
Roman soldiers didn't wear ordinary sandals into battle. Their shoes were designed for warfare. They wrapped tightly around the foot and contained spikes on the bottom that gave them traction and stability. Without proper footing, a soldier could easily lose the battle. The same is true spiritually. When we lose our footing, we become vulnerable to fear, anxiety, worry, discouragement, and frustration. The gospel of peace keeps us from slipping. It helps us remain steady when everything around us feels unstable.
Peace Helps You Stand
Paul repeatedly tells believers to stand. Stand against the enemy. Stand after you've done everything you know to do. Stand firm.
Peace is what gives you the ability to stand. It gives you stability when everyone else is panicking. It gives you confidence when uncertainty surrounds you. It gives you security because your life is anchored in Christ instead of circumstances.
As leaders, people are watching how we respond under pressure. Our peace often becomes someone else's confidence.
Peace Is a Daily Decision
Just as you wouldn't wear yesterday's shoes into today's workout without putting them on again, you cannot rely on yesterday's spiritual preparation for today's battle.
Every day requires fresh preparation.
Every day requires putting on the Armor of God.
Peace is something we choose daily.
Not because life is perfect.
But because Jesus is faithful.
Three Ways to Walk in Peace
1. Prioritize Your Relationship with God
Peace always begins with His presence. Make time every day to meet with God. Create a place where you can consistently pray, read Scripture, worship, and listen. The atmosphere you create in private will influence how you respond in public. The stronger your relationship with God becomes, the steadier your peace becomes.
2. Create Margin
Many people live without peace because they live without margin. They rush from meeting to meeting. From appointment to appointment. From responsibility to responsibility. Jesus never seemed hurried. He always had time for people because He walked with purpose instead of panic. Margin allows peace to lead instead of pressure.
3. Practice Gratitude
Paul tells us in Philippians 4 to worry about nothing, pray about everything, thank God for what He has done, and then His peace will guard our hearts and minds. Gratitude changes our focus. Instead of dwelling on what is missing, we begin recognizing God's faithfulness. Peace grows wherever gratitude lives.
Bring Peace Wherever You Go
One of the greatest responsibilities of a leader is creating an atmosphere that helps others flourish. You can either carry anxiety into every room or carry peace. You can either spread drama or spread confidence. The peace of God should be evident in the way we speak. The way we lead. The way we handle conflict. The way we respond to criticism. The way we serve others. People should feel more hopeful after spending time with us because we've spent time with Him.
Sometimes Peace Means Walking Away
Not every battle is meant to be fought. Sometimes the most spiritual decision you can make is to remove yourself from unnecessary temptation. James tells us to submit ourselves to God, resist the devil, and he will flee. Notice the order. Submission comes before resistance.
There are moments when wisdom says, "Stay."
There are other moments when wisdom says, "Walk away."
Peace helps us know the difference.
Leadership Challenge
This week, ask yourself one simple question before every major decision:
"Am I being led by fear, pressure, or the peace of God?"
Do not allow anxiety to make your decisions.
Do not allow busyness to determine your priorities.
Allow the peace of Christ to rule your heart.
When you put on the shoes of peace every day, you become steady when others are shaken.
You become hopeful when others are discouraged.
You become a leader who brings confidence into every room because you know the Prince of Peace is walking with you.
