Raise Your Shield of Faith

The Armor of God | Part 6

Every day, you and I have a choice. We can focus on our circumstances, or we can focus on the character of God. That choice determines whether we walk in fear or faith. Paul tells us to "take up the shield of faith." Notice the wording. He doesn't say to admire it. He doesn't say to leave it lying on the ground. He tells us to take it up.

Faith is something we exercise every day.

Every Battle Requires Faith

Life is full of battles. Some are physical. Some are emotional. Some involve relationships, finances, or decisions about the future.

As believers, we shouldn't be surprised when battles come. We should expect them. But we should also expect to win. Too many people enter life's battles hoping to survive. God wants us to enter them expecting victory. He has already perfectly equipped us through the Armor of God. Now we must learn how to use what He has given us.

What Is the Shield of Faith?

The shield Paul described wasn't a small ceremonial shield carried for appearance. It was a large shield that covered the entire body. Its purpose was protection. Spiritually, the Shield of Faith protects us from the enemy's lies, fear, discouragement, and doubt. Faith doesn't eliminate attacks. Faith extinguishes them. The enemy will always send fiery arrows.

"You'll never recover."

"It will never change."

"God has forgotten you."

"You've failed too many times."

Those thoughts are not truth. They are invitations to doubt God's character. The Shield of Faith reminds us to trust what God has said instead of what fear is saying.

Faith Is Trust

Many people think faith is simply believing something good will happen. Biblical faith goes much deeper. Faith is active, daily trust in God's character and God's promises. My confidence is not based on perfect circumstances. My confidence is not based on getting the outcome I wanted.

My confidence is rooted in who God is.

God is faithful.

God is good.

God never changes.

God always keeps His promises.

When those truths become the foundation of my life, fear begins to lose its influence.

Don't Put Your Faith in the Outcome

One of the greatest lessons we can learn is to stop placing our faith in results. Sometimes we pray and the answer doesn't come the way we expected. Sometimes doors close. Sometimes disappointments happen. If our faith is built on outcomes, our faith will rise and fall with circumstances. But if our faith is built on God's character, it remains steady no matter what we face. God's promises do not change because circumstances change. His faithfulness remains constant.

Soak Your Shield

Roman soldiers prepared their shields before every battle. They soaked the leather in water so that fiery arrows would be extinguished upon impact. That picture is powerful. God's Word is often compared to water. If I neglect Scripture, my faith becomes dry. My thinking becomes brittle.

Fear gains influence. But when I spend time in God's Word every day, my faith stays strong. The promises of God become fresh. My perspective changes. I stop reacting to circumstances and begin responding with confidence.

Feed on God's Faithfulness

Whatever you consistently feed on will eventually shape your thinking. If I constantly feed on bad news, fear grows. If I constantly feed on criticism, discouragement grows. If I constantly feed on social media, comparison grows. But when I feed on God's faithfulness, trust grows. Remembering what God has already done gives me confidence for what He will do next. Faith is strengthened every time I remember His goodness.

Five Ways to Raise Your Shield

1. Be Intentional

Faith doesn't grow accidentally.

Schedule time with God.

Read His Word consistently.

Protect your spiritual growth like you would any other important priority.

2. Soak Yourself in God's Promises

Find promises that speak directly to your current battle.

Read them.

Meditate on them.

Declare them.

Allow them to shape your thinking.

3. Stay Filled with the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit strengthens us from the inside out.

He gives us wisdom, courage, peace, and power to stand firm when life becomes difficult.

4. Speak Faith Every Day

Your words reveal where your faith is placed.

Choose to declare God's promises instead of repeating your fears.

Speak life over your family.

Speak hope over your future.

Speak faith over your circumstances.

5. Remember God's Faithfulness

Take time to reflect on what God has already done.

The same God who carried you before will carry you again.

His faithfulness has not changed.

Neither has His love for you.

Leadership Challenge

This week, identify one area where fear has been speaking louder than faith. Find three Scriptures that address that specific situation.

Read them every day.

Pray them.

Declare them aloud.

Then make the decision to trust God's character more than your circumstances. Remember, faith is not pretending problems don't exist. Faith is believing that God is greater than every problem you face. Raise your shield. Trust His promises. Stand your ground.

God has already equipped you to win.
