Remember Your Future

Building Identity, Roots, and Peace with Lloyd Bustard

Every once in a while, you have a conversation that stays with you long after the cameras stop rolling. That’s exactly what happened when I sat down with Lloyd Bustard for this episode of Leadership Lifter Talk. Lloyd is a pastor, teacher, speaker, and now author of a powerful new book called Remember Your Future. What he shared wasn’t just good insight—it was the kind of truth that settles deep in your spirit.

A Word That Became a Legacy

Lloyd told me how the book came out of one of the hardest moments in his life. In a time of discouragement and betrayal, God gave him a word from Isaiah 46:10—“He declares the end from the beginning.” That scripture became a lifeline. And then God whispered something to his heart: “Remember your future.” Right then and there, he knew he had a message to share—not just for the world, but for his own children and grandchildren.

It wasn’t about writing just another book. It was about leaving something of eternal value. As leaders, parents, and believers, that’s the kind of legacy we should all be aiming to leave behind.

You Don’t Arrive at the Future—You Grow Into It

One of the most powerful things Lloyd said during our talk was this: “Your future doesn’t need more opportunities. It’s waiting on who you become.” That hit me hard.

So many of us chase the future like it’s just over the next hill. But Lloyd reminded me—and all of us—that we don’t stumble into the future. We grow into it. It starts with planting roots, not just reaching for the sky.

He shared how his own roots go back to growing up in a family of 19 kids—he was number 18. After losing his father at age nine, his mother raised the family with deep faith and fierce resilience. They didn’t have much, but they were rich in what mattered: prayer, humility, and trust in God.

Identity Comes Before Assignment

Lloyd spoke about the importance of knowing who you are before trying to do what you’re called to do. Before Jesus ever performed a miracle, the Father declared, “This is my beloved Son.” That identity came first. It has to for us, too.

He challenged us to develop what he calls a “Gold Standard Personality”—one that’s forged in discipline, refined through struggle, and marked by humility. That kind of character doesn’t bend with culture. It stands firm in truth. I couldn’t agree more.

Becoming Geneva: Carriers of Peace

One of the moments that stood out most was when Lloyd spoke about becoming “Geneva.” He explained how Geneva is known around the world as the capital of peace negotiations—a place where opposing sides can sit at the same table and find reconciliation.

Lloyd believes, and I do too, that God is calling us as believers to be safe spaces in a divided world. Not passive, but peacemakers. Not echo chambers, but bridges. He said something I’ll never forget: “We’re called to carry peace like a passport, ready to cross borders and create unity.”

If You Feel Like You Don’t Have a Future…

At the end of our conversation, I asked Lloyd what he’d say to someone watching who feels like they have no future. His response was full of compassion and conviction: “You’re alive today because there’s a prophetic design over your life.”

If you’ll turn your heart toward God, plug into His Word, and walk in community, your life can transform in a year. He didn’t say it as a theory—he said it with faith born from experience.

Final Thoughts from My Heart

This episode with Lloyd Bustard reminded me why we do Leadership Lifter Talk in the first place. It’s about speaking life into people, pointing them back to God, and calling out the potential they may not even see in themselves yet.

If you’re in a season of waiting, wondering, or questioning—let me encourage you: Remember your future. God wrote it before you were even born. Now it’s time to grow into it.
