The Building of a Team

In the book of 1 Samuel 10, we find a powerful phrase: “God knitted them to his heart.” That’s where all great teams begin—when God knits people’s hearts together for a divine purpose. At Church on the Rock, we’re not just gathering staff or volunteers—we’re building a team called by God, joined in spirit, and focused on the vision.

God’s Team Is a Called Team

We don’t recruit for convenience. We don’t look for people just to fill a spot. We build with those who are chosen, called, and whose hearts God has already touched. A true team member:

  • Believes in the call.

  • Believes in the anointing.

  • Believes in the vision.

And just as importantly, they are not here to do their own thing, promote their own agenda, or use the ministry as a stepping stone. They are 100% behind what God is doing in and through this house.

The Focus of Our House

Every church has a specific DNA—ours is:

  1. Prayer

  2. The Word of God (teaching and preaching)

  3. World Missions (evangelism)

This is what we emphasize and therefore what we empower. If it’s important to the leader, it must be important to the team. Otherwise, our hearts are not knitted together.

When God Builds, Attacks Come

The more you do for God, the more you will face spiritual pressure. But we stay focused. We stay on track. We don’t allow discouragement or division to get in. We’re not moved by troublemakers, critics, or silence from others. Saul kept silent when faced with rejection—and so should we.

My Emphasis for the Team

Every year, I set my focus, and in this season, it’s on:

  1. Building a unified team

  2. Equipping and planning

  3. Producing predictable, fruitful people

  4. Evangelism

  5. Leading from a place where others can hear my heart

And that kind of team only comes when our lives are knitted together with purpose.

The Power of Purpose

Everything God builds—whether a team, a church, or a marriage—requires purpose. Purpose brings power. It brings direction. It births passion. At Church on the Rock, our purpose is:

  • To set the captive free

  • To bring reconciliation

  • To disciple believers until they walk in their full inheritance in Christ

We are a purpose-driven church made up of purpose-driven people.

Four Pillars for Team Building

To build a strong team, remember these four words:

  1. Purpose – Why we do what we do

  2. Prayer – Staying connected to God and unified with each other

  3. Partnership – Becoming more than coworkers; becoming family

  4. Penetration – Boldly reaching into every man’s world with the Gospel

This is illustrated beautifully through Nehemiah’s rebuilding of the wall—each family took responsibility, and together, the work was completed. That’s what partnership in ministry looks like.

Wisdom from Proverbs

Proverbs 30 gives us insight from creation:

  • Ants – Small but powerful because they understand purpose

  • Conies (rock badgers) – Fragile yet strong through association

  • Locusts – No leader, yet unstoppable in unity and prayer

  • Lizards – Bold enough to get into king’s palaces

That’s how we must be—purposeful, united, and unrelenting. When we move as one, with the same heart and the same call, nothing can stop us.

Final Thought

Jesus got into Peter’s boat. We’ve got to be willing to step into others’ boats too, going into every man’s world—not waiting for them to come into ours. That’s how we reach the 1,739 unreached people groups. That’s how we fulfill the Great Commission. That’s how we finish our race.

Let’s say it together: “We can by the grace of God.”
