Goal Setting: A Statement of Faith

Psalm 20:4 (AMP)“May He grant you your heart’s desire and fulfill all your plans.”

Only 3% of people write down their goals—and those are the people who actually accomplish them. That should tell us something.

At Church on the Rock, we don’t live by accident—we live on purpose. We’re called to lead our lives with vision and intention. When you set goals, you’re not just making a to-do list. You’re making a faith statement. You're putting action behind your belief that God has a future for you.

Why Set Goals?

  • There is no growth or motivation without goals.

  • Goals are how we put legs to our vision.

  • Goals must be realistic, clear, defined, and decisive.

  • If you set 10 goals for the year and stay focused, you’ll likely accomplish 80% of them.

Goals are the steps to your vision. And vision is the image of your future.

7 Steps for Setting God-Honoring Goals

  1. Write them down. Make it plain. Make it visible. Make it real.

  2. Prioritize them. Not everything is urgent. Discern what matters most.

  3. Make a plan. Faith without a plan is wishful thinking.

  4. Act daily. Do at least one thing every day that moves you closer.

  5. Ask: “Who do I have to become to achieve this?”
You’ll have to change your habits to change your habitation (Psalm 71:3). You can't become someone new while staying exactly the same.

  6. Ask: “What are the obstacles I’ll need to overcome?”
Fear, peer pressure, offenses, lack of money, time, and even your own self-image. Don’t let these be your ceiling.

Don’t set your goals according to your resources. they’re too small.

  7. Develop the attributes that will take you there.

    • Courage: Not the absence of fear, but the will to keep going. Master fear before it masters you.

    • Responsibility: Don’t blame others. Own it. Move forward.

    • Be realistic: Stay in faith, not presumption. Let God’s wisdom guide you.

Stay Joyful

Acts 20:24 (AMP) says, “If you lose your joy and get bitter, you won’t finish.”
Bitterness and burnout are goal-killers. Joy is your fuel. Keep it full.

Remember

Setting goals isn’t carnal—it’s spiritual. It’s how we partner with God to walk out His will on earth. Your goals should reflect your faith, not your fear. Let your vision come from the Word, be empowered by the Spirit, and lead you into all God has for you.

Let’s go after everything God’s placed in our hearts—on purpose, by faith.
