The Law of Consistency
The Key to Growth, Legacy, and Leadership
A few years ago, I had a pastor friend in Los Angeles take me up to the rooftop of his building one evening after I had just finished speaking. As we looked over the lights of the city, he leaned in and said to me, “Dave, most men can’t do this because they can’t stay with it long enough.”
That statement has stuck with me for decades. What was he saying? Consistency.
Most people can start strong, but not many finish well. You’ve seen it before. Whether it’s New Year’s resolutions, a new workout plan, or a fresh business idea. We go all in for a week or two, then the excitement fades, and so does our commitment.
But the truth is this: consistency is the price tag for greatness.
Consistency Is the Difference Maker
In Joshua 1:8, God gives Joshua the key to success: “Meditate on the Word day and night…” In other words, don’t just do it once in a while—do it every day.
That’s the law of consistency. Doing the right thing, the right way, daily.
Think about it:
Marriage that lasts 52 years doesn’t happen by accident.
A church that thrives after 42 years doesn’t happen overnight.
A leader who leaves a legacy didn’t get there through shortcuts.
Fame can come overnight, but greatness only comes through longevity.
How to Build Consistency
So, how do you and I grow in this law of consistency? Let me give you five practical steps.
Become Self-Aware
Stop making excuses. Stop blaming your background, your age, your circumstances. Growth begins when we’re honest with ourselves. If I’m in denial, I’ll never change.Identify What Needs to Improve
Ask yourself, “Where do I need to change?” Is it discipline, time management, health, or leadership follow-through? Clarity comes when we take personal responsibility.Decide How to Improve
Don’t just wish—create a plan. Replace bad habits with better ones. Surround yourself with people who are reliable and consistent.Develop a Daily Process
Success isn’t about big moments—it’s about small habits repeated over time. Start small: read your Bible daily, commit to a financial plan, or set consistent exercise goals. Small wins lead to big victories.Adopt the Attitude of a Lifelong Learner
Leaders who last are always learning. Read biographies of great men and women who modeled consistency. Their stories will shape your habits, your mindset, and your leadership.
A Closing Thought
Here’s the big idea: If I’m not growing daily, my future won’t get better.
Consistency and legacy are connected. What you do every day determines what you leave behind.
Leaders, don’t look for shortcuts. Don’t chase the quick fix. Stay faithful, stay steady, stay consistent. Over time, consistency will open doors, build influence, and create a legacy that lasts.
Remember this: God is for you, and His grace will help you stay with it long enough to finish your race.
